In the battle of Antietam the South had more of a defensive plan and the North pushed in and attacked the south. The North had a flank that was commanded by Burnside. They pushed to the south side and had to cross a bridge to get to the south. The bridge was only 12 feet wide. They were up against three Confederate batteries and 600 men. The bridge was captured by Burnside at about 1:00 p.m. The bridge was later named Burnside Bridge. The Battle of Antietam was one of the bloodiest days of battle during the Civil War, there were about 23,000 casualties. Hooker and Mansfield attacked in the morning and Sumner came in as support but pushed his troops south. Then Burnside pushed his troops across the creek in the afternoon. The Confederate major A.P. Hill pushed his troops down to the south side to try to stop Burnside's attack. Jackson and Stuart set up their troops to defend the attacks from Hooker, Sumner, and Mansfield. The North one the battle of Antietam and pushed the Confederacy back into the town of Sharpsburg. The Union lost 12,400 men where the south only lost 10,600 men. The Union had 87,164 troops present and the South only engaged 38,000 troops.
